Stychrome’s story part 5
So I, Stychrome began to dominate the other rabbits and I learnt to be mischeifous. For some reason they other rabbits sat on the ground all day long but I would hang from the roof or walls of the cage in order to surprise the humans. It often worked.
Eventually we were all so beaten up from fighting for dominance that were were given separate homes. We had a good life, sitting around relaxing and eating and getting fat, with only one interruption that changed the lives of all the rabbits: The flood.
One night it started raining, and like every other time it rained I began to mock the mice and rats who didnt have a nice dry home like us rabbits. I got worried though when the water started coming into our home and rising.Everything floated and we got wet feet. Then more water came in and we all had to sit on the highest point of our home to avoid the water. Soon our feet were in water even at the top. At that time I wondered what Pashun would be doing, since the top of his house was lower than where I was now sitting. Outside my cage I could see dirt and sticks and leaves floating on the water. In fact that was all I could see. I couldnt even see the water anymore or even any green grass to eat. I wondered if we would have to eat weetbix forever after that. Finally the humans decided to rescue us and we were picked up and taken into the humans house where it was dry and warm. I was wrapped in a cloth and I couldn’t move much because of that. I had a sleepless night that night listening to the rain outside. I wondered what made the humans so sure that the water would not flood their own house.
The next day the flood had gone down and we were taken outside to see our homes. Everything was covered in mud. Even the humans’ giant drinking bowl was full of disgusting brown water. I watched as the humans tried to clean my home. I knew it would never be the same again, but I didn’t care because it was worth it just to see them work for me!
I spoke to Pashun that day. It turned out that he was underwater for about 10 minutes stuck against the roof of his cage, before the roof was opened and he jumped out of the water into the arms of Paul, the human who had opened the roof of his cage. I asked Pashun how come he didnt drown or get brain damaged and he said ‘whats that?’. After that he was never quite the same.
Quite soon after the flood we moved home to a completely new place. Find out what happens next time…
